How Oral Health Impacts Overall Health

Maintaining great oral hygiene leads to being healthier overall.  Not taking care of your oral heath can lead to more health problems in the long run. The bacteria in the mouth can spread through the body and cause cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, or diabetes. If you have gingivitis, the bacteria from that can travel into the brain, causing dementia.

Periodontis, or gum disease, is often the root cause of these health issues. Although periodontitis relates to these health concerns, this does not mean that one condition directly causes the other. But it is known that diabetics and smokers are at higher risk of developing periodontal diseases.

Good oral hygiene habits include: brushing after every meal with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily and using a mouth rinse to kill bacteria. You should also visit a dental professional regularly for cleanings and the prevention and treatment of cavities.

Do’s

  • Brush your teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss between your teeth once a day.
  • Eat a balanced diet, limit between meal snacks and eliminate sugary foods.
  • Clean your tongue when your brush your teeth.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth and teeth hydrated.

Do Not’s

  • Don’t forget to clean behind your back teeth.
